Where is South Yorkshire?

So, where is South Yorkshire? Nestled on the east side of the Pennines, South Yorkshire is the southernmost county in the Yorkshire and the Humber region and covers an area of 599 square miles. The city of Sheffield is its biggest settlement, while the metropolitan boroughs of Barnsley, Doncaster, and Rotherham form the rest of the county.

South Yorkshire is landlocked by its bordering counties. To the north is North Yorkshire, with East Riding of Yorkshire to the north-east. Lincolnshire lies to the east, Nottinghamshire to the south-east, Derbyshire to the west and south-west, and West Yorkshire to the north-west.

Living in South Yorkshire

Once an industrial hotspot, South Yorkshire has rebranded itself as a hub for music, sport, culture, and artisan trades. You’ll find plenty of outstanding restaurants and shopping amenities, such as Meadowhall, interspersed with the region’s iconic Gothic architecture and Victorian monuments. From cycling the family-friendly Trans Pennine Trail in Barnsley and touring the scenic points of the Peak District to paddleboarding in the centre of Sheffield, the county is perfect for those who love the great outdoors.

The Peak District pokes into the boundary and fringes Sheffield along its west side. Inside the city, the canal towpath blends modern street art with a Victorian industrial backdrop for a dramatic effect. Or opt for less serenity and soak in live music at the renowned Leadmill venue or the Tramlines Festival. Famous for its racecourse, Doncaster also boasts historic indoor and open-air markets, international cuisine, and leisurely pursuits aplenty.

The M1 connects the county to Leeds in the north and down through Nottingham and Leicester to London. Meanwhile, the A1(M) offers fast links to the South East and up towards northern National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The A628 also cuts through the Peak District to ensure a straightforward route to Manchester, around an hour from Barnsley.
