New homes in Hampshire: 10 best developments

Affluent Hampshire is a popular location to live and work, but where’s the best place to rent or buy a new property in the county? We will explore the Top 10 developments the area offers – as decided by HomeViews’ verified residents. Our rating system covers everything from how well developers manage their homes to their design and facilities, helping you find your dream property at a glance. But first, let’s explore all the reasons you might want to invest in a new build home in Hampshire.

Where is Hampshire?

On the coast of the English Channel, Hampshire is the largest South East England county. You can trace its illustrious industrial past back to Roman Britain, when the county town of Winchester was still the capital of the ancient kingdom of Wessex. Southampton and Portsmouth are the largest cities in the area, with market towns including Alresford, Alton, Andover, Bishop’s Waltham, Lymington, New Milton, Petersfield, Ringwood, Romsey and Whitchurch.

Berkshire borders Hampshire to the north, Surrey to the north-east, and West Sussex to the east. The English Channel and the Solent form the southern boundary, with Dorset to the west and Wiltshire to the north-west.

Living in Hampshire

So, what’s it like to live in Hampshire? With a varied geology and two National Parks covering up to 45 per cent of its area, the county is very popular with tourists and locals who appreciate its natural landscape. As well as being the home of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, Hampshire also boasts thriving industries in the business, maritime, agriculture and tourism sectors.

At the western end of the South Downs National Park, on the River Itchen, the cathedral city of Winchester occupies a fairly central position. Its rich cultural heritage is a draw in its own right, but the city is also crammed with excellent shops, restaurants, markets and top-rated schools. And with the South Downs on its doorstep, residents can escape to the countryside in minutes.

Running alongside the city, the M3 provides a direct link to London (c. 60 miles) and Southampton (c. 14 miles). Great for those who need to commute or frequently visit family.

But Winchester isn’t the only place worth noting. In the north, Basingstoke has evolved into a business and financial centre. And Aldershot, Portsmouth, and Farnborough have strong links with the Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force, respectively. The county is also just a short hop across the water from the Isle of Wright – a fantastic, close-to-home getaway.

Hampshire property prices

Hampshire property prices averaged at £392,389 in November 2021 – a slight fall on this time last year. Flats achieved around £209,066, with terraced houses selling for £281,019 on average. Semi-detached homes in Hamsphire secured £352,458, while detached properties went for £611,969.

As of November 2021, the average rental price for a Hampshire home was £1,469 PCM. Expect to pay £796 on average for a one-bedroom property, with rents rising to £2,057 PCM for five-bedroom homes.
